
Dr. Smith holds responsibility for all of the Duke Medical School's research-related interactions with commercial entities including clinical trials, non-clinical sponsored research, material transfers, and other related endeavors. Dr. Smith also has intellectual property management responsibilities, particularly in the context of that arising from, or closely associated with, commercially sponsored research projects.
Prior to joining Duke in 1994, Dr. Smith had spent over twelve years in various corporate R&D; research and management positions, including in the TSI Corporation R&D; Division, the EG&G; Mason Research Institute, and at GTE Laboratories. His military service was as an Army intelligence officer stationed at the U.S. Army Foreign Science and Technology Center.
Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Virginia. He also holds an M.S. in organic chemistry from Northwestern University, and a B.S. in chemistry from Washington and Lee University. His postdoctoral experience includes research at the Institute for Neurobiology in Jülich, Germany, the Department of Physiology at Washington University, and the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole. Dr. Smith holds four patents and is the author of numerous scientific publications. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
