Benefits to Licensing

Medical Center Chancellor Victor Dzau and University President Richard Brodhead have been clear in articulating a vision for Duke of “knowledge in the service of society.” Our job at OLV is to coordinate the process of making that happen – to do what is needed to work with inventors to get Duke innovations to where they impact people – in clinics and hospitals, across an array of high tech venues, at home, at work and at play. Inventions may be licensed to an existing company or as part of the process of forming a new company.
  • Licensing technologies facilitates the intellectual exchange of ideas and may lead to further academic-industry partnership.
  • Often, underlying hypotheses are proven as technologies are advanced well beyond the capacities of a single investigator.
  • Technology licensing allows a broader scientific and business community to discover the value of an invention and of a researcher's work.

As part of a technology licensing agreement, Duke receives consideration such as license initiation and maintenance fees, milestone fees, royalty payments and/or equity. Consideration to Duke is distributed to inventors and departments based on the Duke Patent Policy
