Inhibitors of nitric oxide as sensitizers of cancer radiation therapy and chemo therapy
Researchers at Duke have developed ways to sensitize tumors to radiation therapy by using agents to block resistance to these therapies by targeting HIF-1a. HIF-1α is an important transcription factor responsible for mediating many hypoxia-dependent and –independent biological processes such as angiogenesis and proliferation. Increase in HIF-1α has been linked to the development of resistance in tumors to chemo and radiation therapies.
