5 Things to Know for MAY 2019

Starting the summer off with some good news from OTC . . .

  1. On May 1st, OTC’s New Ventures Group held Duke’s first Venture Day. The day-long event allowed us to showcase eight startup companies and five pre-startup technologies working on therapeutic innovations to over a dozen different venture capital firms (mostly from the East Coast), giving our faculty and startups new contacts and feedback on their innovations.
  2. Duke New Ventures (DNV) just completed the fourth cohort of New Venture Fellows—a semester-long program that matches Fuqua students interested in entrepreneurship with a DNV Mentor-in-Residence to work on a Duke spin-out. Over the last two years, the program has grown from four students to 13 in this cohort, and feedback from Fuqua’s Health Sector Management program indicates it has generated a lot of interest from both current and prospective students.
  3. The Triangle Business Journal recently reported that over 40 start-ups, thousands of inventions and patents, and millions in revenue have been produced by Duke, NC State, and UNC this past year.
  4. Durham-based Pattern Health Inc., working with technologists, clinicians, and behavioral researchers to make healthcare more efficient, has digitized and is offering for licensing Impact of Weight on Quality of Life (IWQOL), one of our paper-based clinical survey instruments with wide appeal. Pattern Health has also recently licensed and is digitizing several other instruments from Duke including End-of-dose Wearing Off Questionnaire in Parkinson disease (WOQ) and Duke Health Measures, a series of instruments developed by the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
  5. The founders of Asklepios BioPharmaceutical, Inc (AskBio), a local developer and manufacturer of gene therapy therapeutics, has received a $225 million investment from TPG Capital and Vida Ventures to augment and accelerate its business. (Technologies licensed from Dwight Koeberl, Pediatrics)
